Dr Margaret Cullen (Co-director)

Dr Margaret Cullen

Professional background

Dr Cullen has been a senior lecturer on the MBA programme at the NMMU Business School since 2002. Her lecturing experience includes lecturing 1st year, 4th year and Masters students, as well as compiling course materials and supervising MBA and DBA student research at NMMU. Dr Cullen was awarded her doctorate in 2007 for her study entitled, “The development of an entrepreneurial management model to promote the survival and growth of family estate wine businesses in the South African wine industry”. She also serves as an external examiner for the University of Potchefstroom on their MBA treatises. Dr Cullen lectures a broad range of business related topics such as Entrepreneurship, Family Business, Marketing, Strategic Management, Business Management, Leadership Integrated Management Systems, E-Commerce and Life Skills. Dr Cullen is also actively involved in the general management of the NMMU Business School’s MBA programme. This includes building the Business School’s image and recruiting students to the programme. Dr Cullen has co-authored and authored several research articles and attended numerous academic conferences, both nationally and internationally. She has supervised over 50 students at Masters and Doctoral levels. Dr Cullen also consults to industry. In 2010, Dr Cullen was the winner of the Business Women of the year: Professional category. 

Apart from her academic career, Dr Cullen is a hands on, results oriented and innovative executive who has achieved continued success through a solutions based approach and sound strategic decisions. She has eighteen years of successful key account management and market development in the liquor trade, both domestically and internationally.

Dr Cullen consults to industry frequently, particularly the liquor industry on Family Business, Entrepreneurship and Strategic matters. She also runs numerous Entrepreneurship workshops, one of which will be a pro bono partnership with IMBEWU NGO, focusing on fostering entrepreneurship in schools in the Zwide and New Brighton townships.

Prof Elmarie Venter (Co-director)

Professional background

Prof Venter has been a lecturer in the Department of Business Management at UPE/NMMU since 1998. Her field of expertise and research is that of managing family businesses and succession from one generation to the next. Prof Venter also lectures and researches Entrepreneurship, Small Business Management and Marketing Communication Management. She was awarded her doctorate in 2003 for her study entitled, “The succession process of small and medium-sized family businesses in South Africa”. She has already published numerous articles in accredited national and international journals on Small Business and Family Business Management issues. Prof Venter has also attended more than 40 national and international academic conferences, authored or co-authored four books and authored numerous chapters in books. 

To date, Prof Venter has authored more than 70 articles published in non-academic journals, magazines and newspapers such as Landbouweekblad, Farmers Weekly, Dairy Mail, Sunday Times and Die Burger on topics ranging from Small Business Management, Succession in Family Businesses and the Role of Women in Family Businesses. She has been invited by large organisations such as Old Mutual and Sanlam to serve as subject matter expert in their national ‘road shows’ for more than five years. She has also acted as keynote speaker for various farmer associations (including Milk Producers Organisation and RCS Farmers Association) and to date completed more than 60 presentations.

Prof Venter is currently Associate Editor of the South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences and a reviewer for four other academic journals. She was just elected as the Chairman of the Board of the South African Institute for Management Scientists (SAIMS), is a member of the Family Firm Institute in Boston, USA and a representative on the Faculty RTI Committee of the NMMU, to name but a few.

Prof Venter was the co-author three times of academic papers that won the Best Paper Award during academic conferences. She was also the recipient of the Renaissance Postgraduate Scholarship to promote equity, diversity and excellence in the ranks of academic staff from 2000-2002. She also won the prestigious Best Dissertation Award from the Family Firm Institute in 2003 based on her dissertation titled “Succession in small and medium-sized family businesses in South Africa”. She was the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences Emerging Researcher of the year in 2007 and the Faculty’s Researcher of the Year in 2010 and received her NRF rating in 2007 as well. In addition, she was a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003 from the old UPE.

Prof Venter also consults to family businesses throughout South Africa. She has a passion for people and observing families flourish and grow in their businesses and families. She is very fond of her own family – her husband Johan and two children, Juane (11) and Eric (8).  Elmarie has also completed both the Half Ironman and the Full Ironman in 2010.

Dr Shelley Farrington

Professional background

Dr Farrington has been a lecturer in the Department of Business Management at the NMMU/UPE since 1995. She was awarded her Doctorate in April 2009 for her study entitled “Sibling partnerships in South African small and medium-sized family businesses”. Dr Farrington has extensive lecturing, research and practical experience in the field of small business and entrepreneurship, specifically relating to start-up issues and business plans. Her field of expertise in the area of family business relates particularly to family relationships and teamwork among family members in business together. She and her husband, psychologist Robin Farrington, a marriage and relationship consultant, work closely in this regard.

To date Dr Farrington has co-authored 18 accredited journal articles and has presented more than 40 papers at international and national conferences. In addition, she is the co-author of a book titled “Starting and managing your own business”.

Apart from her academic prowess, Dr Farrington has been actively involved in a family business with her two brothers for the past 12 years. She holds the title of financial manager. Dr Farrington has also been instrumental in the establishment of 5 other small family businesses, where she currently serves as an active advisor.

Dr Chris Adendorff

Professional background

Dr Adendorff is involved in lecturing, promoting and researching Entrepreneurship, Small Business Management and Research Methodology at the NMMU Business School. He was awarded his PhD in 2004 for his study entitled, “The development of a cultural family business model of good governance for Greek family businesses in South Africa”. Further qualifications include a Certificate in Family Business Advising from the Family Firm Institute in Boston (USA) and an Advanced Diploma in Life Coaching from the Institute for Life Coaching (UK). Dr Adendorff is currently complementing his academic and entrepreneurial careers with a M.Phil degree in Futures Research Studies at Stellenbosch University.

Dr Adendorff has a passion for the management of family owned businesses, especially in the areas of strategic planning, governance and turnaround strategies. He has published numerous articles on Family Business, Technological Entrepreneurship, Culture and Governance in national and international journals. He further serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation (UK) as well as Inderscience Publishers Ltd (UK). Amongst other affiliations, Dr Adendorff is an Associate Researcher at the NMMU Business School, and a member of the Family Firm Institute (USA), the Family Business Network (UK) and the International Family Enterprise Research Association (IFERA).

Apart from his academic competencies, Dr Adendorff has, together with his architect wife Gillian, built a highly successful family business empire. He is actively involved in the management of his businesses, both nationally and internationally.
