How important is ethics in business? 31 May 2016

On the 21st of April the NMMU Business School, in conjunction with BEN-Africa and KPMG, hosted an Ethics in Business Strategic Conversation. It was a lively, informative discussion between Business Ethics specialist and industry. Everyone agreed that ethics play a very important role in society and especially in business. As a School that endeavours to educate the leaders of tomorrow talks around ethics are extremely important. The first specialist, Prof Arnold Smit from Stellenbosch University Business School and the Head of Social Impact and an Associate Professor in Business in Society, focused his presentation on the human and organizational side of cheating. Dr Schalk Engelbrecht, currently working in KPMG’s Forensic Business Unit and responsible for KPMG’s Ethics Advisory Service Line in South Africa, discussed the “science of ethics” and the implications thereof for business.

Port Elizabeth – 21 May 2016 – On Saturday, 21 May 2016, the NMMU Business School hosted new and ‘up-and-coming’ entrepreneurs for an Entrepreneurship Workshop. Entrepreneurship, according to the Business Dictionary, is “the capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. The most obvious example of entrepreneurship is the starting of new businesses”.

A day filled with celebration: Graduation 2016 14 April 2016

It is Tuesday, the 12th of April 2016 and what started out as a cold and windy morning has suddenly turned into a sunny afternoon. Just in time for graduation. This year the Business School had a total of 102 graduates comprising of two BBA, three DBA, 57 MBA and 40 PDBA students. After all the hard work these students gathered to reap the rewards of their dedication and determination.

CEO of Old Mutual Wealth discusses happiness and successful investment at NMMU Business School 22 March 2016

Mr Andrew Bradley, NMMU Business School Advisory Board member and CEO of Old Mutual Wealth led a thought-provoking discussion with a packed Auditorium at the NMMU Business School a few days ago. Quoting Warren Buffet, he reiterated: “To invest successfully over a lifetime does not require stratospheric IQ, unusual business insight, or inside information. What is needed is a sound intellectual framework for making decisions and the ability to keep emotions from corroding that framework.” He used this quote to emphasize the simplicity of investments. It merely requires some knowledge devoid of emotion and commitment.
